Your Guide to Decaf Matcha
Curious about decaf matcha? You’re in the right place! Let’s explore all your top questions about this amazing tea. Discover how you can enjoy the authentic matcha experience—the vibrant color, rich flavor, and calming ritual—anytime you want, without the caffeine.
What exactly is decaf matcha?
It’s real, high-quality Japanese matcha that has gone through an extra step: a gentle, all-natural process to remove over 95% of its caffeine. You get the same beautiful green powder and its amazing health benefits, but you can enjoy it in the evening without it affecting your sleep.
How do you get the caffeine out?
We use a super smart, modern method called the supercritical CO2 process. It uses pressurized carbon dioxide (the same stuff in sparkling water!) to selectively wash away caffeine molecules while leaving the flavor and healthy antioxidants right where they belong. It’s completely natural and leaves zero chemical residue.
Does it taste the same as regular matcha?
It tastes incredibly close! You’ll still get that wonderful, savory “umami” flavor that makes matcha special. Some people find it’s even smoother and less bitter than regular matcha. When you start with high-quality leaves like we do, the delicious, authentic taste shines through.
What are the main health benefits?
You still get the powerful antioxidants (like EGCG) that matcha is famous for, which help protect your body’s cells. The biggest benefit is the calming effect of L-theanine without the buzz of caffeine. It’s perfect for finding a moment of calm focus or winding down before bed.
So, how much caffeine is left?
Hardly any! A regular matcha has about 60-70mg of caffeine. Our decaf matcha has only 2-6mg—about the same as a cup of decaf coffee. It’s such a tiny amount that it won’t give you the jitters or keep you awake.
Who is decaf matcha perfect for?
- Anyone sensitive to caffeine who still wants to enjoy the matcha ritual.
- Matcha lovers who want a calming cup in the afternoon or evening.
- Anyone looking to improve their sleep by cutting down on caffeine.
- Those who are pregnant or nursing (we always suggest checking with a doctor first!).
How do I prepare it?
It’s a simple, calming ritual. Just sift 1-2 teaspoons of matcha into a bowl, add about 2-3 ounces (60-90ml) of hot (not boiling) water, and whisk in a ‘W’ shape until a beautiful, creamy froth forms. It’s also delicious in lattes, smoothies, and even baking recipes!
